Walgreens started course correcting in May by cutting prices on 1,300 products sold in its stores nationwide to attract frugal shoppers. In June, the company announced plans to close hundreds of its stores, and then, it followed up in July with an announcement that it would close about 2,150 “underperforming” locations by 2027.

The pharmacy giant estimates that a quarter of its 8,700 locations are unprofitable as consumers shift their spending habits.

It's been a very difficult year for Walgreens Boots Alliance (NASDAQ: WBA), but the stock was climbing higher following its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report and the details of its store closure plan. Nonetheless, the stock is still down about 60% year to date.
