It happened as the fire truck was responding to a report of a vegetation fire near the Union Pacific train tracks. According to radio dispatches reviewed by The Sacramento Bee, personnel from “Brush 44” were called at 10:50 a.m. to a homeless encampment on the 500 block of Jefferson for a campfire that had grown out of control amid strong winds.

One person died and another was injured after a fire truck guiding a big rig through a debris-filled area ran them over in West Sacramento, police said Friday.

Crews were responding to the report of a brush fire along the railroad tracks in the 500 block of Jefferson Boulevard around 11 a.m., using a "spotter" to guide them through a debris-strewn area. That's when the brush truck drove over a carpet on a dirt trail.
