Amazon is making a major investment in nuclear power, backing three projects in Virginia and Washington state.

The cloud computing and retail giant signed a deal to buy electricity generated by small modular nuclear reactors. Put Amazon on the list of big technology firms embracing new nuclear technologies to fuel their data centers.

Amazon has a deal with Energy Northwest to fund the initial feasibility phase of a nuclear facility in central Washington, with the right to purchase electricity from the 320 megawatt plant.
